   Letter from the CEO

Happy New Year! While the Omicron surge is making it feel a bit like Groundhog Day all over again, SPLC is looking forward to a year of action and impact. Almost every problem the world is facing - climate, equity, inclusion, supply chain resilience, income disparities, safe and healthy homes and workplaces -  can be directly affected for the better by the work we do. So by learning, growing, and scaling our efforts to drive change through procurement, we can help our organizations - and our society – make meaningful progress on these and other issues this year!

In 2022, SPLC will again hold three engaging and enlightening daylong Deep Dive virtual events. Mark your calendars now to make sure you can attend – on March 30 for a session focused on inclusion, diversity, and community wealth building; June 15 for a look at how procurement is creating positive change by driving safer chemicals adoption, and thereby reducing harm to workers, communities, and the global environment; and September 21 for a critical working session on procurement’s role in enabling climate action. In a new twist for 2022, we’re planning to also offer “watch parties” - hosted gatherings where attendees can watch and discuss the event content in person (wow!).

We’re scheduling speakers for a compelling webinar series with topical sessions each month, as well as a number of SPLC publication release events. Details are posted here as sessions are finalized. And finally, we will be rolling out climate-focused learning and coaching programming over Q1/Q2 of this year, to equip procurement professionals to address this most critical of impacts, and to enable experienced leaders to cocreate solutions to shared implementation challenges.

Join us - for a Deep Dive or a webinar.  Or better yet, access the tools and support you need as an SPLC member, and connect with our incomparable community of practice in pushing the boundaries of what sustainable procurement can achieve.

Sarah O’Brien, CEO

P.S. SPLC Members - don’t miss our 2022 annual Goal Sharing webinar on January 26 from 1-2 ET/10-11 PT,  the launch of a Packaging Action Team, and several new Peer Learning Circles very soon.  Fill out the Call for Participants in the Member Community or contact to join!

SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT: Boston University

Boston University, SPLC member since 2018, recently launched their Sustainable Purchasing Program (SPP) as part of their Climate Action Plan to reduce emissions for campus operations to net zero by 2040, make buildings more energy efficient, aim for Zero Waste, and shift away from fossil fuels to wind and solar sources.

Lisa Tornatore, Sustainability Director for Boston University explained SPLC’s role in creating the SPP, “The coaching program helped us to hone in on our objectives, while understanding the basic principles of sustainable purchasing. We learned of a variety of examples from other organizations that helped us solidify what would work best for BU. The program led us through a step-by-step process where we ultimately ended up with a working draft of the SPP. The SPP aims maximize University departments’ budgets through the reduction of natural resource usage and operating costs, while improving environmental and social impacts. It gives all departments an opportunity to contribute to the University’s goals, especially as it relates to reducing Scope 3 emissions.”

It wasn’t just the SP3 program that attributes to BU’s well defined plan. Tornatore continues, “The Peer Learning Circle was also invaluable. We developed relationships with higher education peers across the country to whom we can bring burning issues and long-term planning questions.”

Peer learning circles are just one of many examples of SPLC Community Collaborations. If any SPLC member is interested in benefiting from peer engagement, please visit our Community post for Call for Participants (members only). Congratulations to BU for their impressive concrete goals, their concerted and consistent effort, a clear and logical path forward, and a dedication to sustainability.
